This hadith is obviously meant to be understood in a Metaphorical, sense. Satan is seen as symbol of everything bad & evil. The prophet was using personification & symbolisim and he was warning the people to be aware about the hygiene of their bodies, its simular to how Jesus told parables. The hadith says “If anyone of you rouses from sleep & performs the ablution''. Abultion is when muslims have to wash parts of the body before praying. So the hadith is talking about people who are about to pray
The hadith also says ‘if anyone of you rouses from sleep’ therefore most likely this hadith is refering to the Fajr prayer which is the first prayer of the day for muslims & it is usually very early in the morning. (im writing this article in august & fajr is 2:48am today). The person usually has to wake up in the middle of their sleep to pray.
The hadith is giving hygiene instructions because its important to be clean, But this action described in the hadith is a very good way to help your mind wake up. If your woken up suddenly your often in a state of Disorientation and Confusion, so performing this act of abulsion will actually help you to wake up and clear your mind.
Muslims generally believe that when a person prays Satan tries to distract that person, because the devil does not want us to be on the right path.. When a person is sleeping they are in a vulnerable state, because they are dreaming, they might be having a nightmare or impure thoughts or other unusual things. So metaphorically speaking these things are connected to satan, i.e. impure thoughts, immoral thoughts, nightmares, confusion and so on. So metaphorically it’s as if satan was in your head at night. This use of language is called personification
Conclusion
Arabic uses metaphors & hyperboles. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) used to instruct people & sometimes he would use metaphorical & symbolic language. People like Iceyyy take the hadith literally & try to misrepresent them. There are other hadiths, which are similar to this, such as one saying Satan is under your dirty nails so you should cut them etc As you can see some hadiths put a link between satan and unhygienic acts and bad manners. Because figuratively things that are bad for us are called evil thus linked to Satan
So when trying to understand the hadith, the word Satan and Evil are synonyms of each other and they are linked in many cases.
Our Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) lived in a time where this was the kind of language being used and these were the metaphors that were understood. Almost 1500 years ago trying to teach a primitive Bedouin desert Arab good manners, morals and hygiene would have been hard. So using examples and metaphorical language helped. This is not evil or superstitious. This is the reason why the prophet Muhammed personified Satan in this hadith.
