Some critics of Islam mention a hadith which they say shows that the prophet Muhammed beleived Monkeys stonned each other for adultry. They mention the hadith against muslims to try and prove the prophet Muhammed was crazy (astagfirullah) the hadith they mention is from Sahih Bukhari Volume 5, Book 58, Number 188
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 5, Book 58, Number 188:
Narrated ‘Amru bin Maimun: "During the pre-lslamic period of ignorance I saw a she-monkey surrounded by a number of monkeys. They were all stoning it, because it had committed illegal sexual intercourse. I too, stoned it along with them."

First of all notice that, nowhere does this hadith explicity claim to be a saying of the Prophet Muhamed (p) almost every saying in Sahih Bukhari and Muslim and in all Hadiths say أن نبي الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال (An nabi Allah sallah allah 3alayhi wa salam qal:) which translates to 'The Prophet of Allah.... said' or 'Allah's Apostle..... said' Therefore because this is missing from the above hadith, this automatically indicates that this is not a saying of the prophet Muhammed.

After looking at the hadith and the isnad (chain of narration), the person who said this was definately not the Prophet Muhammad himself, but it was one of the Companions by name of ‘Amru bin Maimun. The hadith is categorised as mauquf which means that it is a saying which ONLY TRACES BACK to the Companion. Therefore, this hadith is not a saying of the Prophet and it is not attributed to him. So it can not be used for a ruling in Islam, and it has nothing to do with the prophet Muhammed (p) himelf. The hadith is authentic (sahih) but it is the words of Amru bin Maimun.

From context 'Amru bin Maimun was talking about his thinking and perceptions before Islam, he had foolishly believed that even monkeys had committed adultery It happened during a period where the pre-Islamic Arabs were very bizzare and they used to do things like burying their daughters alive and doing the tawaf naked. Islam elevated the status of arabs, and ended these bizzare and pagan practices. a
