Yawning From Satan?
Iceyyy (IceTea-Girl) made a video about several hadiths. She mentions one hadith about Yawning being from Satan. She says this proves the prophet was a supersticious person. The hadith is from Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 54, Number 509, which reads
Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 54, Number 509
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, "Yawning is from Satan and if anyone of you yawns, he should check his yawning as much as possible, for if anyone of you (during the act of yawning) should say: 'Ha', Satan will laugh at him."
Response
This hadith is obviously meant to be understood in a Metaphorical, sense. Satan is seen as symbol of everything bad & evil. The prophet was using personification & symbolisim to teach people good manners, he was teaching primitive Bedouin desert Arabs, basic manners which they never heard of before. The use of language is simular to how Jesus told parables in the Bible
The devil in this hadith is your act of offense to other people. Many people get offended when people yawn without covering their mouths especially in a conversation, the same relates to sneezing. As we know Yawning can be contagious, sometimes even when we think about yawning that makes us yawn too. Another hadith from the prophet recommends that we should cover our mouths with our hand when yawning. The hadith says ‘"When one of you yawns, he should keep his mouth shut with the help of his hand, for it is the devil that enters therein’ (Sahih Muslim, Kitab Al-Zuhd wa Al-Raqa'iq, Book 042, Number 7130)
Yawning is normal & healthy, but our Prophet recommends we cover our mouth when yawning in order to uphold good manners and to avoid offence. This is far from being supersticous.
Arabic uses alot metaphors & hyperboles. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) used to instruct people about good hygeine and good manners & sometimes he would use metaphorical & symbolic language. People like Iceyyy take the hadith literally & try to misrepresent them. There are other hadiths, which are similar to this. As you can see some hadiths put a link between satan and unhygienic acts and bad manners. Because figuratively things that are bad for us are called evil thus linked to Satan
So when trying to understand the hadith, the word Satan and Evil are synonyms of each other and they are linked in many cases.
Our Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) lived in a time where this was the kind of language being used and these were the metaphors that were understood. Almost 1500 years ago trying to teach a primitive Bedouin desert Arab good manners, morals and hygiene would have been hard. So using examples and metaphorical language helped. This is not evil or superstitious. This is the reason why the prophet Muhammed personified Satan in this hadith.
