Numerical 'Contradictions' ? Some critics of Islam (such as the girl featured in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tG2NNWVDyX8) claim that the Quran has internal contradictions , to prove this they point they point to an example. For instance the Qur'an states that God created the heavens and the earth in six days (in places such as Quran:7:54, 10:3, 11:7, and 25:59) However in Quran Chapter 41 verses 9 to 12, more detail of the number of days involved in this creation are given. In this ayah, Allah separately mentioned the amount of 'days' it took to create the earth and the number it took to create the heavens. Critics such as the girl in that video say if we add up these numbers, they add up to eight, not than six, which is a contradiction Response The Quran says in Surah 41:9-12 '... do you indeed disbelieve in Him who created the earth in two days? ... And He set upon the earth mountains, towering high above it. He blessed it and provided it with sustenance for all those in need, alike, in four days. Then, ... In two days, He formed the sky into seven heavens' The creation of the world, took the first two of these four days. So these two days are not a separate time period from the first four days. They are the first two days of the four days mentioned in the next verse. In the 11th and 12th verses state that the sky was formed in 2 days. Therefore the total time involved in the creation of the earth and the heavens adds up to 6 not 8, because you cant add up what you've already counted!
The verses explain the separate time periods for each of the events that took place within the six days of creation.
You must also be aware that the term “day” mentioned in these verses does not refer to a 24 hour-day but it means different periods and phases see my article 'Dinasours Mentioned In The Quran'The Quran has to be interpreted fully, because one part of the Quran might explain another, so you cant take verses in isolation |
